Genesis II

Scripture Translation by Donald Antenen

As with last week, I’m thrilled to share a portion of translation

at : Genesis II.

You can access the full text at here:

Beginning: a Verse Translation of Genesis
Genesis 1-2
I’ve been reading Evelyn Waugh’s biography of Msg. Ronald Knox, one of the great Bible translators of the 20th C. His translation has not been served well by print publishers (I believe the rights are held by the litigious but poorly distributed Baronius Press), but you can…

Genesis II

Book of the birth
  of Heaven
  of Earth
In the time
  of Lord God's making
    earth
    heaven
Every field shrub
  unplanted
All field grass
  unsprouted
For
  LORD God
    hadn't sent rain
      upon Earth
    nor man
      worked soil.

Geyser went up
  from Earth
  watered
    every plot of Soil

LORD God fashioned
  Man
    of dust
      from Soil
  breathed
    into his nostrils
      living soul

LORD God planted
  an easterly garden
    Eden

There He placed
  Man
    whom He'd fashioned

LORD God grew
  from Soil
  every tree
    beautiful
    or toothsome
  Tree of Living
    mid Garden
Tree of Knowing Good and Evil

A river ran
  from Eden
  to water it
  thence split
    to four headwaters
      Pison
        circling Havilah
        whence gold
          good gold
            of that land
        amber
        precious stone
     Gihon
        circling Kush
      Hidekel
        running east of Assyria
      Euphrates
        the fourth

LORD God took
  Man
  put him
    in Eden
      to work
      to watch

LORD God adjured
  Man
    "From the Garden's trees
    eat
save from the Tree of Knowing Good and Evil
      lest you die
        on the day
          of your eating
            from it"

LORD God said
  "Man alone is unwell
  I will make
    for him
      an aid
        before him"

LORD God fashioned
  from Soil
  every
    Field Beast
    Sky Bird
  led each
    to Man
      to see
        what he would call
          it

Each named
  by Man
  took its name
    to the very soul

Man named
  every
    Creature
    Sky Bird
  every
    Field Beast

He didn't find
  an aid
    before him

LORD God dropped
  sleep
    over Man
      who slept
  took
    one
      of his ribs
  closed him
    with flesh

LORD God fashioned
  the rib
  He took
    from Man
  into Woman
    led her
      to Man

Man said, "Finally
  bone
    from my bones
  flesh
    from my flesh
    called Woman
      because
        from Man
          she was taken"

On this
  man leaves
    his father
    his mother
    embraces
      his woman
        one flesh

The two
  Man, Woman
    bare
    untroubled.
